After I booked a cruise to Doubtful Sound and also a tour of the Te Anau glow worm caves, I got a free family pass to the Kiwi Park in Queenstown. The Kiwi Park is a family run wildlife centre that also saves injured birds and wildlife. For me, it was the best thing in Queenstown. The food at their cafe was tasty too and not overpriced.

This cruise was one of the highlights of our 2 week family holiday in NZ. The boat was a very fancy wood-interior boat with shiny brass fittings and ornamental sails. It reminded me of an "Agatha Christie" quality cruising experience; that normally only rich people can afford. The food was all made onboard by a gourmet chef, who managed to cope remarkably well with my weird dietary requirements.
This cruise was $1000s less than the boat with ensuite toilets or the boats traversing Milford Sound. Because there were only about 30 passengers, it didn't feel crowded at all. The other passengers were very nice and well-educated; without being pretentious. My teenage kids enjoyed kayaking off the boat. I enjoyed going out on the motorised dinghy. The crew were very happy on this boat. And we saw dolphins.

The crew were outstanding—warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate—and the food was absolutely delicious.

We had an unforgettable trip aboard the Wanderer, cruising overnight through the majestic Doubtful Sound.
As for Doubtful Sound itself, “incredible” barely does it justice. Its sheer scale, stillness, and beauty are something you feel as much as you see. And just when we thought the experience couldn’t get any better, a pod of dolphins appeared and completely topped off our adventure.
Thank you very much,
Rob

Nice cruise on a beautiful and comfortable old boat. 6 caring staffs for 35 passengers on board. Plenty of excellent food. We have appreciated the kayak and boat excursion. The staff gave many interesting explanations but we didn't understood them all. We would have appeciated to have some paper support in French. In addition to that we were lucky to have a nice weather and to see the bottle nose dauphins.

Latest Questions about Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise - Wanderer (Doubtful Sound)
I am looking to book an overnight cruise on the Wanderer in January 2027. I will be travelling with my parents who are in their 70s. My mother broke her kneecap a few years ago which has impacted her mobility. What is the accessibility like on the boat? Is there a gangplank she can use to get on/off the boat at arrival/departure? Once on the boat she will be ok, just slow, on stairs.
What time can you board the boat prior to departure.
